Balu gets Cinare gold medal

Times of India, June 13 2003

Popular playback singer and film actor S.P.Balasubramaniam was awarded Cinare Cine Gold Medal at a colourful function at Ravindra Bharati on Thursday.

Speaking on the occasion, thespian of Tollywood Akkineni Nageswara Rao said normally awards were given in memory of those who were no more.

But it was a unique gesture to institute an award in the name of a great Telugu poet C Narayana Reddy in his lifetime.

He said selecting Balasubramaniam was the most appropriate choice as he was a singer par excellence.

He was one of the rare singers who has perfect diction and ease with which he could add greatness to lyrics. If Ghantasala was the temple of playback singing in Tollywood SP was the “gopuram” (dome) of the temple, he said.

C Narayana Reddy said that the first song penned by him was sung by Ghantasala and was shot on popular Telegu film star and former chief minister the late N T Rama Rao while his last song was sung by S P Balasubramaniam in the film Seetaiah and was shot on NTR’s son Harikrishna.

Accepting the award, Balasubramaniam said that he was just a drop in the ocean of music.

“I have a long way to go and learn a lot. I am still in infant stage as far as music was concerned” he said. He said the award had put greater responsibility on him.

S.P.Balasubramaniam has been singing in many Indian languages. He has sung in Hindi films also. His Hindi film songs have become very popular with the listeners from across India.
