MEDLEY OF HITS

Source: The Hindu, May 3 2006 by S.R.ASHOK KUMAR

Veterans S.P. Balasubramaniam and `Malaysia' Vasudevan came together for a concert in the city.

Some people in the audience wanted S. P. Balasubramaniam to sing a Telugu song and he coolly replied that music does not have any language barrier. "But I will sing for you some other time." What he said was true. His golden voice, which has rendered nearly 40,000 songs, is the joy of the entire nation. And the best thing is that whenever SPB sings he does not fail to improvise and lend his own style to each song. He excels in voice modulation. So it was not surprising that when veterans S. P. Balasubramaniam and `Malaysia' Vasudevan performed together recently, at the Iruvar concert organised by Star Vijay at Y.M.C.A grounds, Royapettah, they took the audience on an enchanting musical trip. Their superhit song "Ennamma Kannu" from the film "Mr. Bharath" made the day for the audience. Though Vasudevan didn't seem to be at his best. Also one wondered when SPB himself was around why Madhu Balakrishnan began the programme by singing the senior artiste's evergreen melody "Idhu Oru Ponmalai Pozhudu".

Chitra was at her best when she sang some of the old hits with SPB. She brought alive the melodies of S. Janaki and P. Susheela.

Madhu Balakrishanan disappointed the audience by not rendering his recent hit number "Konjaneram Konchaneram" from "Chandramukhi".

A medley sung by the singers was another highlight of the evening. There were nearly 25 songs in the medley that the five singers — SPB, Malaysia Vasudevan, Madhu Balakrishnan, Chitra and Saindhavi — sang. The songs were from A.M. Raja period to the recent one.

SPB took the audience down melody lane with memorable songs such as "Sangeetha Megam", "Panivizhum Malar Vanam", "Enkeyum Epodhum Sangeetham Santhosam" "Andhi Mazhai", "En Kanmani", "Ore Naal Unnai Naan" and "Mudhan Mudhala", "Adiye" and "Germanil Senthean Malare". Malaysia Vasudevan sang "Kadhal Vaibogame" and "Podhuvaga Emmanasu Thangam". The programme would be telecast on Star Vijay later this month.
