Music is my pranayama

The Times of India, August 20, 2002

THIRTY-FIVE years in the industry and more than 35,000 songs to his credit. He shares the record with K J Yesudas for the maximum number of national awards – six. What keeps S P Balasubrahmanyam going?

“I enjoy what I do. I never accept anything that I’d regret,” he says. The veteran singer enjoys taking music to people’s homes through his new TV show Padalani Vundi on MAA TV.

“Here I interact with children between 10 and 14 years.”

He’s a self-taught singer and even now has pangs of regret for not having learnt from a guru.

“People ask me how I manage to sing carnatic music when I haven’t learnt it. But I think I’d have done much better if I’d learnt the traditional way. Now, imparting a little bit of what I know to children gives me happiness. This show is also a means to showcase new talent to the public and to the industry.”

SPB is upbeat about acting in a new Telugu–Tamil bilingual.

“It’s an eerie 3D film from the makers of My Dear Kuttichattan. I act as a magician.”

His son S P Charan has taken forth the legend with his numbers in Telugu and Tamil.

“He’s also cut pop albums in Tamil. I am happy that he’s a good singer. But having a father like me is a disadvantage for him. Comparisons are inevitable. And they expect him to sing like me from day one. He’s acting in a TV serial Annamalai and has got good recognition. But the best thing is,my son and I are acting together in a Kannada film.”

One of his unfulfilled wishes is to make Kamal Hasan dub his voice. “People are used to seeing Kamal’s Telugu films with my voice. One day, I hope I act in a film and him dubbing my voice,” chuckes SPB.

What many wouldn’t know is that SPB dubbed for Anil Kapoor. “I’ve recorded for actors like Jagapati Babu and Rajnikanth and even Anil Kapoor, for his Telugu film Vamsa Vriksham.”

He sings for more than seven hours a day. “Music is my meditation and pranayama. All that I wish for is to retire gracefully before people grow tired of me.”
