WHEN NORTH met South in Chennai, the outcome was melodious. And the huge
crowd which assembled at the Indian Airlines stadium on Friday night
would vouch for that.
Unmindful of the sultry evening, they went footloose in rhythm with
the foot-tapping and melodious numbers. Ooh la la laa had achieved what
it wanted - bring to Chennai music beyond the boundaries. Literally.
The clock struck seven and the stadium was nearly full with people
still coming in, in large numbers. The show began without much of a
delay. A laser show unwrapped the package of for the evening. Once the
theme was introduced by Swarnamalya, the hostess, it was pure Indian
music all the way through three- odd hours.
The crowd grew impatient, expecting their very ``man with the golden
voice.'' And when he came, he made them laugh too. ``I broke my ankle
sometime ago in an accident. I am out of breath having to climb stairs
and walk. But when I saw Adnan Sami, I felt I am Amitabh Bachchan.''
``Swasame..'' from Tenali with Anuradha Sriram, ``Vathikuchi..'' from
Deena, ``Oruvan Oruvan Mudalali..'' from Muthu, ``Ezhamai enum pungatre..''
and then the semi-classical ``Sangeeta jaadhi mullai..'' -- it was
melody taking over from pop. And the crowd liked it too.
