Balasubhramanyam opens town hall

Deccan Chronicle, September 15, 2003

‘This is the stage from which I gave my first performance at the age of five as Raghurama in Bhaktha Ramadasu where my father and noted Harikatha exponent S.P.Sambamurthy was Ramadasu,” recalled noted playback singer Padmasri S.P.Balasubhramanyam while addressing the packed town hall on Sunday night in Nellore.

Balasubhramanyam, who inaugurated the recently renovated 88 year old historical Rao Bahaddoor Rebala Lakshmi Narasa Reddy Town hall on Sunday, turned nostalgic and recalled the number of programmes he staged from the same auditorium right from his childhood.

Referring to Bikshatana Poorvaka Thyagaraja Aradhanothsavam initiated by his father by collecting alms to conduct the aradhanothsavams which still continue by his father’s followers, every year bringing stalwarts in Karnatic music to the town hall every year. He attributed his singing talents and recognition to his father’s devotion to saint Thyagaraja and music.

Pointing to the Rs.40 lakh donation given by J.S.Reddy to renovate the hall bringing back its old glory, Bala praised Reddy for his great gesture.

He advised the parents to cultivate interest in children towards our culture and tradition.

There was all round applause to every word this son of Nellore spoke from the huge gathering. Noted actor and Sankarabharanam fame J.V.Somayajulu, who inaugurated the stage, said that the meeting reminds him Devendra Sabha.

Most heartening feature of the evening was songs rendered by children belonging to the Little Musicians Academy, Hyderabad. Nearly 50 students of the school made the audience, including Balasubhramanyam, spell bound with their songs.

Nellore S P K.V.Rajendranadh Reddy, District Collector G.Anantharamu, District Judge Syamasundar Rao and others were present.
