SP steels the show

The Hindu, August 24, 2004

FOR MUSIC lovers who thronged the Ravindra Bharathi on Sunday evening, it was a musical treat of a lifetime. Here were the all time greats in flesh and blood performing at their peak.

It was a function to felicitate doyen M.S. Viswanathan in the presence of stalwarts like Ilayaraja, S. Janaki, Ravu Balasaraswati and others. If the occasion was an overwhelming one, what made the evening even more memorable was S.P. Balasubrahmanyam in his elements, doing what he does the best. Enthralling the audience with golden oldies, he has a surprise in store. And his multi-voiced aural delight from `Anthuleni Katha' turned out to be the icing on the cake.

The mimicry components in the song `Taali kattu subha vela, medalo kalyana mala' need no reminder. SPB fans got him render the song `live', without the use of `tracks', which have become normal today. The song, which has several portions with different voices and sounds, saw SPB donning the role of a first-class mimicry artist. And he slipped into the role with nary an effort. He closed a nostril, then the other and later both for a while, producing the required sounds in the song. The crowd turned ecstatic letting out a collective sigh.
