MADURAI: Unassuming, as he always is, the legendary singer, S.P. Balasubrahmanyam, did not hesitate a bit when children of a school orchestra requested him to lend his voice.
There was a standing ovation when he took over the stage and began to sing his famous number - `Sangeetha megam, thensindhum neram... ' from `Udhaya Geetham'.
For the music troupe of the Oxford Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Sivaganga, there could not have been a better occasion than this.
Scores of schoolstudents from different parts of the country who participated in `The Hindu Young World Quiz 2006' here on Tuesday were thrilled to see Mr. Balasubrahmanyam on the dais.
The singer recalled his college days in Chennai during the 1960s when he used to watch the cricket scoreboard at `The Hindu' office.
Calling himself a "half-baked" Mechanical Engineer, he said it was destiny that made him what he is today.
Music knows no barriers such as caste, creed and language.
"I tell people that my mother tongue is music. I am a `viswa manava' - one who belongs to the world," he said evoking an instant applause from the audience.
For more than an hour, Mr. Balasubrahmanyam and his wife, B. Savithri, enjoyed the grand finale of the all India quiz in which six teams participated.
