Trip down melody lane

By S.R. Ashok Kumar, The Hindu, October 25 2004

IT WAS an evening of melody and music, of light and colour. Also some nostalgia.

`Legends' was an event which featured the peerless S.P. Balasubramaniam and the melodious K.S. Chitra.

The man has sung over 35,000 film songs in just about 35 years — 1000 songs a year, in almost all Indian languages. In fact, when he was introduced to Bill Clinton, the then U.S. President wondered whether he was singing all 24 hours a day! Amazing that the man still manages to retain his matchless voice.

Winner of six national awards and various awards for his singing, `SPB' never disappoints the audience in any of his shows.

And when Chitra joined him on the stage for the programme organised by Seventh Channel for Vijay TV, the audience expected some real melodious music and were not at all disappointed. SPB started off with `Ithu Oru Ponmaalai Pozhudhu' (from Nizhalgal).

When he was joined by Chitra, with the number `Aalapol' from Yejamaan, it turned out to be a mesmerising journey for the fans. In all, there were 30 songs, perhaps not enough for the thirsty fans.

And the singing duo got the audience into the rhythm with a medley comprising SPB's unforgettable songs such as `Iyarkaiyenum', `Ayirum Nelave Vaa', `Unaekkene Mele Nintrai.'

There was also some `masala' for the younger crowd.

Pop Shalini and Dewan sang `Gundu Gundu Ponne' and few other recent numbers. Alphonsa danced her way into the hearts of spectators with two songs and one is `Sirikki Sirikki Vantha' from "Vasool Raja MBBS."

Sangavi in a leather outfit was an eyeful, as she serenaded with two dance numbers. The glamorous show will be telecast by Vijay TV next month.
