Golden notes of nostalgia waft through night and capture hearts

TIRUCHI : With a melodic start, the "Golden Nite" show by playback singers S.P. Balasubramaniam and `Chinna Kuyil' K.S.Chitra, reached the zenith at the end.

The show, organised by the KMC Cancer Institute and the Tamil Nadu Vanigar Sangankalain Peravai, received a grand response with the audience going into raptures at the end of each and every number.

Illayaraja's melody numbers, which were initially dominating the show, were received meekly. While SPB opened the programme with famous number of yesteryears from the film `Sankarabaranam', Chitra opened her score with her Tamil debut song `Chinna Kuyil' from the film `Poove Poochoodava'.

Her melody numbers including `Padariyen Padipariyen', `Poojaiketha poovidhu', received grand cheers. The applause was doubled when the all-time hits of A. R. Rahman like `Anjali Anjali Pushpanjali' were presented by SPB.

The audience's applause was so moderate at the start that the compere Abdul Hameed urged the audience to encourage the singers. U.K. Murali's orchestra, which has done over 6,000 stage-shows within the country and abroad, added flavour to the musical feast. The duets were well received by the audience than solo numbers. Murali, who has a record of singing continuously for 16 hours, scored `Poojaiketha Poovidhu' with Chitra, which swayed the packed auditorium.

The national award-winning number, `Ovvoru Pookalume' from the film `Autograph', which has been added in the syllabus of Tamil literature by the Madurai Kamaraj University, was yet another number well received by the audience.

The auditorium banged with applause when the recent hit of SPB's `Devuda Devuda' from Chandramukhi was presented. `Alampol, velampol' from the Rajini starrer `Yejaman', `Kamban yemanthan' from the movie `Nizhal Nijamagirathu', `Ore naal unai naan' from `Ilamai Oonjaladukirathu', and `Ragangal pathinaaru' from `Thillu Mullu' were the other numbers which took the audience trip down memory lane. Despite a few technical problems that kept popping up, the background music perfectly duplicated the numbers.

The Director of the KMC, K. Chandrakumar, and the president of the Vanigar Sangangalin Peravai, T. Vellaiyan, honoured SPB and Chitra.

The programme was organised to create awareness of cancer among the common people.
