Singer Balasubramaniam against remix culture and will act in films if roles suit him.
A singer is above barriers of language. If singers have their preference of language, they would be doing injustice to other languages, said well- known singer S P Balasubramaniam in Bangalore on Monday.
Speaking at ‘meet the press’, organised by Press Club of Bangalore, Balasubramaniam said, that although unfamiliar with the Kannada language, the people of Karnataka have always treated him with a lot of love and respect.
Talking about his foray into the music industry, Balasubramaniam said, “I got into it all by accident. I have had no formal training in music but somehow I have the innate ability to learn fast and sing even faster,” and added that “I remember singer Yesudas once said to me “even if you don’t know music, music knows you.” These words gave me a lot of encouragement to move forward.”
About remixing music, Balasubramaniam said that he is very unhappy with the concept of remixing.
“Remixing changes the originality of any music. If one wants to mix and match, one could redo the music instead of trying to completely change the music, its original beat and rhythm,” said Balasubramaniam.
He says he never got the opportunity to make his own. “To make one’s own music one has to first have the opportunity and second the song must be pleasing and lyrics must be audible to the people,” Balasubramaniam said.
Commenting on the new generation songs, Balasubramaniam said, these new generation songs would be appreciated as long as the soul of the music is not lost.
About acting in films, Balasubramaniam said, “my first love is music. Though I have taken up roles in films, I am a bit choosy about the characters. I choose only those characters that will suit my age and my size.”
Why not start a music school? To this Balasubramaniam said, “let me learn music first before I begin to teach music. Isn’t my singing itself a form of teaching?” asked Balasubramaniam.
